A viable opposition party is essential to democracy in my opinion. The dangers of stranglehold single party control are well documented, from both sides of the aisle, and Virginia government has enough ethics issues as it is. But this year the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) is putting on a performance so bad that it boggles the mind. Much of that blame must go to the “leader” of DPVA, failed gubernatorial candidate Brian Moran.
There was a ton of resistance to Moran being installed as DPVA Chairman from many in Democratic circles, including their primary bloggers, Ben Tribbett of Not Larry Sabato and Lowell Feld of Blue Virginia. They were obviously right because DPVA has been an utter disaster since he took over. Lowell ran a biting commentary last week about Moran’s latest actions leading up to this election, and this week we get a local Loudoun example of how clueless he is. On November 5, three days before election day, Moran will be hosting an evening event for Loudoun Supervisor candidate Larry “Spirit Pot” Roeder, who no one gives a snowball’s chance in hell of beating Matt Letourneau.
Republicans will have a huge 2011 in Virginia elections. Plenty of races were winnable for these guys but they have made just about every mistake possible and seem to be utterly without direction or common sense. republicans can either take the gift they’ve been given and work to build a semi-permanent majority, or more than likely they will go crazy on fringe issues and insider deals and we’ll see another wholesale flip in a few years. Of course the Dems will need to ditch Brian Moran to help make any such flip possible.
