Is Speakman a Criminal, Too?

By Lloyd the Idiot

We’ve already discussed how Loudoun County sheriff candidate Ron Speakman is a liar and a cheat, and we can now, ironically, add clueless lawbreaker to his resume.  He has huge signs on medians in the area, probably 5′ by 8′, blighting the area and significantly blocking drivers’ visibility, all in violation of the Virginia Code and VDOT regulations.  What’s funny, though, is that they’re along Fairfax County Parkway — in Fairfax County.  So not only is this candidate for sheriff breaking the law himself, he doesn’t even know where his district is.

    First class imbecile.

See if you can grab a photo next time you go by.

  • BlackOut says:

Well, guess he’s thinking his Fauquier County sheriff race was a bust, now he’s worried about Loudoun, so maybe he’s hedging his bets and trying to go for the Fairfax County Sheriff position.

  • Fred says:

It’s on the wrong side of the border of the county, but still you would think his campaign would be wise enough to know where the county line is. I see them everyday on my commute. FFX County has a contested sheriff’s race so this is probably causing more confusion for some voters. This signs I see are right along the Route 7/FFX County Pkwy overpass.

  • BlackOut says:

Where is Bob Moses when you need him? He’s been to the courses that explains how and what and where signs can be removed.

  • FWIW, I learned during the ’09 race that Fairfax has uniquely forgiving laws about political signs on the public right-of-way. That’s why you see so many over there, compared to here, or so the FCDC told me.

Doesn’t explain why a Loudoun candidate has a sign up in Fairfax, unless he’s guessing a lot of Loudoun residents use that road, and is trying to exploit the Fairfax law.

  • DC Beltway Bandit says:

LI – Kind of funny you posted this.

Over the weekend I was at the intersection of Mason Ln/Gleedsville Rd/Rt 15 (you know that blind intersection) and I watched a scruffy guy get out of his pick-up and yank up a 5′x6′ Speakman sign. This guy then broke Speakman’s sign in half over his knee and tossed it into the cab of his pick up.

As luck would have it, we ended up at the same destination point (a local farm stand). So I asked the driver “hey what heck was all that about at the intersection a while back”?

Driver’s response: “That moron placed his sign at a dangerous intersection and this numb nuts wants my vote? Now every time I see one of his signs in a VDOT area I pick them up. Any way, I am a trained County volunteer and I have the authority to clean up that type of garbage.”

I ended up buying him a hot apple cider and he shared a few stories about Speakman with me. Let me tell you it was the best $2.25 I have ever spent.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Great work, DCBB! And Lloyd wrote this BTW, not me.

How can Fairfax put up with this garbage??? Especially from someone from another state? (I was going to write county, thinking Loudoun, but we all know he really doesn’t qualify as a Loudoun resident and has been living in Potomac Maryland!)

  • AFF says:

I’m getting warmed up for some illegal Dick Black sign pulling fun. Those “Christians” put up illegal signs faster than Jesus could turn water into wine.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

I’ve seen them on VDOT ROW for ages now – ever since the primary.

  • Independent Voter says:

This is nothing new; the Fairfax County Parkways has always been littered with campaign trash. They start right after the Loudoun County line. There will be hundreds of them in the coming weeks. And most if not all the candidates will be guilty. I guess Fairfax laws are more lax. Most of us drive the 1700 frequently and, yes, we read the signs–whether we want to or not. Where are the De-signers these days? Can’t wait to see Black’s smiling face on the median strips.

  • Independent Voter says:

Oops, that should be the 7100!!!

  • Loudoun Outsider says:

Any body else hear Speakman has applied for PERV1 as a vanity license plate?

  • Lloyd says:

Actually, i think Speakman is just getting an early start on his next sheriff’s race – in Fairfax County.

  • Lloyd says:

IV, this is different from the other typical 2 x 3 signs. These are whoppers, three wooden pools and tethered down.

  • iriving shwartz says:

FFX county allows quicker permitting of signs. I spoke to Mr. Speakman, it takes 20 days for the Loudoun process for permits, 10 minutes in FFX. Speakman has all his signs on his property that he owns, (spend time in the county property records on line and you will see).. Mr. Chapmans are the illegal ones all over including in Faquier County prior to the compeletion of the primary. This is illegal.

  • Wolverine says:

I would suggest Stevens Miller is right. Lots of Loudoun people either commute back here or return from Fairfax shopping expeditions and family/friend visiting via that parkway. We’ve done it ourselves many times.

Good Lord, let us not get into another mutual campaign sign removal/destruction contest. These campaigns are nasty enough already. But these candidates had better learn that some HOA’s do not allow political signs on common areas or limited common areas which belong technically to all stakeholders.

  • BlackOut says:

Wolverine, the same can be said about VDOT right aways. The law says they are not allowed there. It’s bipartisan.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Just released the irving shwartz comment from moderation. Irving, don’t listen to anything Speakman says – he’s full of shit.

  • Sissy Mike says:

Oh, the horror! What a bunch of sissies complaining about signs. I guess this group follows its leadership. A bunch of complaining SISSY’s.

  • Lloyd says:

Ffx can issue a permit on vdot right of way? I’m calling bs.

  • Lloyd says:

Oh, and since when does speakman own the median?

  • Lloyd, I find it confusing too. But I can tell you that, when Lori Waters and I met with county staff to discuss the citizen-participation program allowing us to train volunteers to yank up road-spam signs in Loudoun, we both asked about the extraordinary number of signs one sees in Fairfax. Again, the answer was, “The law there is different.” And that’s what the party leaders in Richmond told me in ’09, when I ran for House from a district that was partly in Fairfax, partly in Loudoun. (Lori and I were trying to figure out how we could write an exception into Loudoun’s program for the one-day-only signs some churches put up.)

Somewhat to my own embarrassment, I can remember driving down Centreville Road two years ago, on that stretch between Sunrise Valley Drive and Coppermine Road, and suddenly seeing dozens and dozens of “Rust” signs, intermingled with dozens and dozens of “Miller” signs. I was one of the road-spammers myself! I went back to my campaign HQ and started hollering at my field organizers. “I have given explicit instructions that we are not to place signs where they don’t belong! What the hell is that on Centreville?” They said. “That’s Fairfax. It’s allowed.”

I know it sounds ridiculous, but either every last candidate, their entire staff, the House Democratic Party caucus, and the Loudoun County professional staff are all wrong about this, or else the law is different in Fairfax.

(Thanks to Cliff Keirce for coining the term “road-spam.” He personally runs around Broadlands and yanks up the ones from developers, apartment-complex managers, yard-service companies, and so on.)

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Just released the “Sissy Mike” comment from moderation. That shows you the intelligence level of the average Speakman supporter.

  • You should try Clarke County. Local laws forbid us to put up 4′x8′ signs on our OWN property. Limited to 10 sq ft in size. All signs have to be so many feet from the road and no way in the medium. It will be taken down in a day and the local Political Chairman will be called and reprimanded by County Administrators.

  • Readyforchange says:

The only Chapman signs I’ve seen are the ones peppering my neighborhoood, on my neighbors lawns, showing support. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen ANY Simpson signs in the neighborhood… I must have some smart neighbors.

  • CC, the problem with sign-enforcement from a political perspective is that those reprimands can be gamed. That is, if the Republicrat running against the Demlican wants the Demlican to get reprimanded, all the Republicrat has to do is plant a bunch of the Demlican’s signs in places where they’re not allowed.

Even without government intervention, it happens. Some of my signs have been known to show up in places that were clearly chosen by people opposing my election in an effort to make me look bad. For the record, I don’t have any reason to believe the opposing candidates in those races were responsible. Someone acting on their own initiative probably does things like that.

I would bet that all candidates, regardless of party identity, find this obsession with sign-location violations somewhat depressing. Every candidate has positions on the local issues that they open the paper, or visit a blog, hoping against hope to see someone commenting upon. Instead, we get letters, posts, and comments–an endless supply of them–about how awful someone must be if their supporters are the kind of people who will actually put a sign by the side of the road.

Makes it hard to remember, at times, that most people care more about things like jobs, schools, safety, and taxes.

  • Lloyd says:

    Sissy Mike and Mr. Stevens,

These are 4 ‘ x 8′ signs on a a VDOT median near intersections on a busy highway. They’re not the little yard signs you typically see all over the place. It’s not an “obsession” with signs; it’s a legitimate safety issue when with these signs in particular.

Virginia Code prohibits signs on rights of way http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+33.1-373

The FFX sign ordinance and the webpage confirms this at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/faqs/signsfaq.htm#1

And the County can’t remove them (?) http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/faqs/signremovalfaq.htm

  • sterling view says:

Honestly people is this all you have to talk about? Sign placement? And you think this issue makes Speakman an unworthy candidate? How about discussing some of the REAL problems with our Sheriffs’ office, and the positive changes Speakman intends to implement. Seems to me you should be concerned about the issues that affect the people of Loudoun, and not this grade school, meaningless crap that you are constantly spewing.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

This is but one small piece of the nasty puzzle that is Ron Speakman.

  • sterling view says:

All of you speak as though you are holier-than-thou, and to be frank… ENOUGH ALREADY! Not a single person goes through life unscathed, as we have all had experiences along the way, some of which are our own doing, and some having been done upon us, that looking back we may or may not change. This nasty puzzle that you speak of, is something YOU have created, and are trying to put together. The pieces will never fit. The man that is Ron Speakman, has already been put together, and cemented in place, and cannot be manipulated by you or anyone else.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Yeah, Speakman is certainly not unscathed – see the new post above.

  • Lloyd says:

    Sterling View,

    1. I have never lied about where I’ve lived.
    2. I’ve never shot anyone nor been shot by anyone.
    3. I’ve never misappropriated confidential email lists .
    4. I’ve never been a candidate who pledged to support the winning nominee and renegged.
    5. I’ve never broken the law by putting up large, dangerous signs on roadways.

Let me know if you need more.

  • sterling view says:

LI, is that the best you can do? Just agree and reiterate what I just said? Keep in mind that going through life unscathed, does not equal wrongdoing, and in fact makes Speakman very relatable.

    Lloyd,

    1. Before you call someone a liar, shouldn’t you be certain about what the truth is? It is irresponsible and ignorant to point a finger based on hearsay.

    2. Not sure why you are attempting to put more falsehoods out there, but Speakman has never shot anyone. He was however, the VICTIM of a violent crime, and you are correct, was shot. Glad to see you have empathy towards victims.

3/4. Pledge or no pledge, sometimes you must stand up and do what you feel is right. Does the name Dakota Meyer ring a bell? He is the Marine Sgt.who was told by his command NOT to get involved in the gunfire from insurgents. Fortunately Sgt. Meyer did not listen, and instead did what he FELT was right, went into the killing zone and saved 36 lives. Speakman feels, as do many others, that he is the best person to serve our community as Sheriff.

    5. Again you are attempting to spread lies. Speakman has not broken ANY law. The signs meet the requirements of both the code of Virginia and the VDOT.

  • Fred says:

SV – It’s not manipulation; its education to insure voters understand the choice they make when they decide who is best equipped, has the values and integrity to lead the sheriff’s office.

  • BlackOut says:

sv, I would not consider sworn court testimony to be hearsay. Including self-damning sworn testimony from Ron Speakman.

Have you even read the case?

  • sterling view says:

BO, the hearsay comment is referring to his residency claims. What sworn testimony are you speaking of?

  • TCJohnson says:

FYI, I was driving down Fairfax County Parkway today and saw those signs for Eugene Delgaudio. So it is not just Speakman who is putting them in other areas.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

sv, I have seen copies of sworn testimony from Speakman related to the shooting incident where he states his address as two different places in Fairfax County during the time he says in his campaign PR that he was a resident of Loudoun County. He’s lying in once place or the other. Along with the voter records and other police charging documents where he has given addresses in Fauquier County Virginia, and the campaign finance disclosures where he lists his home in Potomac Maryland. All of these occurring in the last 26 years that he has said he has lived in Loudoun County. That makes him an easily provable liar in my book.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

SV, see the discussion of the shooting incident in the new post. Yes he was shot by his lover in the midst of a spat. The mitigating circumstances and Speakman’s partial acceptance of the blame led to her receiving a one year suspended sentence. For shooting someone. Something was seriously screwed up for her to get no time. Go read the file for yourself before you go buying the Speakman line.

  • The Constitutionalist says:

Great discussion guys! Though a bit off topic it does give evidence to the type of mindset the candidates have regarding respect to the law.

I have yet to see any Simpson or Chapman signs in violation.
I’ve seen twice the large obnoxious signs put up by Speakman’s camp in places they shouldn’t be.

Sign placement aside, what does all these obnoxious signs and half page ads in every local paper say about Speakman’s spending? LOADS!
Not only is he not being funded by large amounts of campaign contributions but he’s squandering the bit that he gets plus loads of his own money on obnoxious ads and signs.
How is that for conservative spending?

He is psychotic. I only thought it was me who thought this but seeing his display at the convention sealed it for me. When I saw his emergence as an independent candidate, I was not so much surprised as sad for him. He is clearly crying out for someone to simply love him for who he is or rather who he says he is. Its sad really. He clearly needs a hug.

  • BlackOut says:

sv, the residency documents are official records, the hearsay on his residency is coming from him.

Back to the subject, have you read the case sv? Or are you just going on what Speakman says about this?

  • [...] and the Loudoun Times-Mirror and Leesburg Today. After reading up on Speakman, she did post a number of comments defending him, under the name “Sterling view,” for which she said she expected to be paid. Speakman said [...]
