3rd Annual TC Turkey of the Year Award
By Loudoun Insider
Somehow I just forgot all about this! Last year I did it a few days before Thanksgiving and announced the winner Thanksgiving Day. I guess we’ll start this today and let it run through the weekend. Make your votes and I’ll tally them up and announce the winner on Monday morning.
Last year’s winner was Andrea McGimsey and I think she deserves serious consideration again this year for helping pull her party down to a depth of electoral despair no one has ever seen. Ron Speakman also deserves mucho consideration. Lots of choices. Fire away.
UPDATE: Good Turkey of the Year lists at the WaPo, a DC Metro one from Robert McCartney, and a national one from George Will. Ours should be more NOVA/Loudoun specific.

I just have to put in the first vote for Ron Speakman. Never have I seen such a disastrous campaign blowing through so much money to come up with 10% of the vote. Truly a political turkey if I’ve ever seen one!
I too vote for Ron Speakman. Never before has Loudoun County seen the likes of someone like him. Runs as a Republican, loses and then breaks his pledge, proceed to trash the Republican nominee while spending over $200,000. his past includes infidelities, being shot, being a lame cop in Leesburg, and some things so vile that it realty should not be put into the public domain.
This egotistical loser should be the turkey of the decade. He is probably enjoying his Thanksgiving at the biker bar, downing brews, chasing skirts, and blaming everyone else that he lost. May we never see another candidate like him again.
Other than that he wasn’t too bad, cynically said.
I made a few obvious typo corrections, F&L, since that was such a great comment! Couldn’t agree more. I hear he still has gigantic signs still up in road rights of way. Just who will clean those up and who will pay for it?
lost a friend died scuba diving in Cozumel today it is so sad
Speakman hands down. (I am tempted to add the 10% who voted for him)
$200K! And all but a couple thousand was his own money. Some 50 year old dudes will do anything to impress and pick up chicks.
This award should really be called the Stevens Miller Turkey of the Year award, to honor the first winner.
blackout have you gone crazy
I will agree Stevens Miller deserves the turkey of the year for the last four years.
I agree. Stevens Miller definitely wins this year. He should also get the biggest loser award. No pardoning him either. This guy should be forever banned from Loudoun politics.
My vote remains unchanged from last year: Jeff Frederick
I think there should be a rule for those who want to nominate Stevens: They must declare whether they’re mad because he’s a “far-left liberal” or a “Republican spy.”
Can’t he just be nominated for being him?
I do agree he should become part of the title, but I don’t know if he merits the award this time around.
McGimsey is such a perennial, I’d say open it up to new blood, and vote for Mr. Speakman, primarily on the residency issues. The other allegations and gossip are gravy.
So much side chatter! Please try to make your votes obvious in your comments to help me in tallying. I though of making this a blog poll, but it simply limits the choices too much.
Here’s some more chatter, but I do make a pick.
Sadly, there are so many deserving nominees including one nominee I named earlier and one implicit from my last post. However, for his unmatched ego, his shameless lies about residency and his outstanding choice in electronic communication during the election season, my vote goes to Ron Speakman.
If the “Turkey of the Year” is the person who makes the biggest public blunders, the winner has to be Mike Turner. Unlike Pervert Speakman, Turner’s lack of leadership and organization doomed his party to near short term extinction.
We Republicans must remember we have to work to earn the public’s trust everyday. Otherwise, we will suffer an election night like the Turnercrats recently did.
Stevens Miller.
He has a mean, vindictive streak that goes beyond politics. His antics probably convinced Buckley not to run again. His vote-splitting plan helped ensure that Andrea would lose. And, he worked hard to defeat Burk. His policies and positions are generally good, but his actions stink. Perhaps a shrink could explain it to us.
Turner is a good nomination, but he is not nearly as public a figure as Mr. Speakman became, and there is not nearly the public documentation of the events and occurences that merit the award.
Plenty of gossip, but still primarily inside baseball–I agree with your sentiments LO, but I vote for Mr. Speakman.
I nominate the guy who designed and emailed the horrid Obama Zombie with a bullet hole in his head.
John Stevens.
Speakman deserves the honors. In fact, he should be assigned some type of registered offender status so voters are alerted of hid antics next time he runs for office.
A dishonorable mention needs to go to the turkey that stole my Plowman bumper magnet last week.
Pervert Speakman bungled one race, Mike Turner bungled over two dozen. Turner should be the clear winner.
Mike Turner and the entire LCDC executive committee.
Mike Sell for his non-apology.
I’ll also vote Mike Turner. I think it’s just that this man clearly earned it by putting up candidates like Larry Roeder, not to mention Joshua Actor. Remember that loon?
Not only did Turner and the LCDC put up some doo doo bird candidates, their redistricting strategy and organizational efforts (or lack thereof) doomed their stronger candidates.
GOBBLE GOBBLE
I vote for Mike Turner. He did a poor job of candidate recruitment, didn’t organize any meaningful candidate support, and did a lousy job articulating the LCDC message. He is among the worst county party Chairs Loudoun has ever seen.
After Creigh deeds blew up the party, most of the good dems followed Monty Python. “RunAway, run away!”
Ron “Isaperv” Speakman.
Mike “I am a huge Ass Hat” Turner.
Honorable mention: LCDC ExCom members.
John “I lost, but hey I deserve to be LCRC Chair” Whitbeck
I might have imbibed in too many single malts tonight, Bandit out!
Speakman, with 2 provisions:
It should be the Marion Barry Turkey of the Year Award, because the bitches set him up; and
You should photoshop his head onto a dong for the official presentation.
DCBB, I’ll go with Ron as your first pick unless you say otherwise.
MHGA, that may just have to happen!
What, no “love” for the Democratic State Senate for their egregious gerrymandered redistricting plan?
But if it has to be one person, or someone in LC, then Speakman – although, in the end, he was of so little consequence that perhaps Mike Turner is the, uh, “better” choice?
Nah, make it Speakman – the first and last time he’ll get my vote.
I’m voting Stevens, but if he can’t win this year, I hope he is considered for the naming of the award going forward.
As a Sterling resident it is really hard not to propose Al Nevarez. There is so much wrong with what he brought to the table it would be worth another series of blog posts in addition to commenting here.
In the interest of countywide brotherhood, however, I will jump on the Speakman bandwagon.
Up until the conclusion of the Republican convention, I think it could have been said that Ron Speakman ran a hard-hitting campaign, and leave it at that. Some might call that euphemistic, but reasonable people could disagree.
Post-convention, the Speakman campaign was off the rails in every possible way, so much so that Ron may well have left the dubious legacy of a political neologism for future campaigns.
A blunder “of Speakman proportions” or cautionary word against “doing a full Speakman” will henceforth likely evoke a knowing nod, and with multiple levels of meaning.
Speakman.
Honorable mention to John Stirrup for totally blowing that primary.
And of course to Turner.
Just to underscore my Speakman vote, his monstrous sign at Rte. 7 and FFx Pkwy is STIlL up.
Saturday morning vote tally:
Ron Speakman 11
Mike Turner 4
Stevens Miller 4
Jeff Frederick 1
LCRC Com Chair 1 (I’ll leave his name out)
John Stevens 1
Mark Sell 1
OK, after restraining from commenting over this past campaign season, about the constant hammering of good (and bad) candidates, I nominate Loudoun Insider as Turkey of the Year, I’m sure at my own peril.
His unrelenting horrible comments about some really good people who are decent, hardworking people, who put themselves out there to be of public service, for very little in return, was hard to read. He had good points on some candidates, i.e. Ron Speakman, who should get Vice Turkey of the Year (pun intended). But his attacks on others was uncalled for and meant to cause controversy.
So Turkey of the Year should go to Loudoun Insider.
Nothing at your peril, MGS. I knew someone would nominate me. I don’t see why you would complain about me, the LCRC won a complete sweep and we will see how well they govern. It is my sincere hope that we’ll see truly conservative fiscal policies and a tax cut. I’m expecting it, I hope you are too. And we’re going to get lots of socially conservative initiatives from Dick Black. Is that the really good person you’re talking about?
Never.
I’ve changed my mind.
I am abandoning my vote for the inconsequential Speakman. Regardless of his stellar resume for being a turkey.
I prefer to highlight and bestow this Turkey recognition to Steve Simpson. Word has it that this Turkey won’t even talk with Chapman about transition plans. Hasn’t called him to congratulate him. Additionally, Simpson from several accounts, is trash talking the imminent arrival of the Chapman regime.
So much for caring about Loudoun County. So much for doing the right thing for the citizens. Add this to his legacy.
OK, one more vote after my last tally, and I’ll allow BlackOut to change his vote. Here’s the final tally:
Ron Speakman 10
Mike Turner 4
Stevens Miller 4
Jeff Frederick 1
LCRC Com Chair 1 (I’ll leave his name out)
John Stevens 1
Mark Sell 1
Loudoun Insider 1
Steve Simpson 1
Ron Speakman is the clear winner in a landslide (the only win he saw this electoral season).
