The Obama Girls as Political Collateral

By Lloyd the Idiot

UPDATED at 7:04 2/21 with additional thoughts.

I was thinking just this past weekend about how the Obama girls (not the “Obama Girl,” but Malia and Sasha Obama) had managed to stay out of the public light for the past three years, and how pleased I was that the press had allowed them to keep their lives as private as reasonably possible.

Well, turns out that 2012 is an election year, and the Obamas make a nice looking family.  Not willing to waste a good picture, it’s the Obama re-election campaign, not the press, today parading around Sasha and Malia  in the election materials including web banner ads and the front page of the campaign’s website.  Copy of banner ad here.

Keep in mind that this is not just a nice family photo buried under the “Bio” section of a website like most politicians do.  No, this one is front and center of the online edition of The Washington Post and, on top of all that, the political message comes from the family.  More specifically, the banner ad states, “Help the OBAMAS Stand Up for Working Americans ” as if to imply that you should join – for the sake of the kids.

I guess, for Barack and Michelle, the proper political photo op is more valuable than their little girls’ privacy.  At a minimum, they sure see an opportunity to exploit them.

Meh… is what it is. Although I don’t remember Bush doing that at all. Or Clinton for that matter.

  • RichmondDem says:

@ Lloyd were you asleep in 2008 or something? They had a similar photo on their campaign website then.

And it’s not like Romney and Santorum aren’t using their wife kids as backgrounds for photo ops.

  • It wasn’t right in 2008, either. And I think it’s even worse when you’re the sitting president.

You don’t see Romney doing that (plus his kids are older)

  • Notice at the top of the page it has “Obama (logo) Biden”.

Maybe Barack isn’t going to dump old Joe for Hillary after all.

  • NateDogg614 says:

I doubt that Biden will be dumped from the ticket. Everyone thought that Cheney would be in 2004 and that didn’t happen.

Besides, where would we be without Biden for comic relief?

  • TCJohnson says:

“You don’t see Romney doing that (plus his kids are older)”

Taken from Mitt Romney’s website, under bio:

  • TC, read what I said – his kids are older now. And those are old family movies, not taken while he was in office. Big difference.

  • TCJohnson says:

But he is using old family movies as a photo op. Don’t see the difference. If his kids were the right age, you know Romney would be doing the same. Think you are grasping at straws there.

There are a lot of legitimate things to bash Obama on. Surely you can find something that isn’t what almost every other politician does. (The only reason why Gingrich isn’t doing it is because bringing up his family relations is the last thing he would want to do.)

  • ACTivist says:

Lioyd, are you really Chris Mathews in real life? Your salivation “love fest” with the Obamas is nauseating at best. And I’m sure that there “nice looking family” picture makes everything right in America. The only reason that the kids haven’t been in the news is because the dictator put them “off-limits” along with his ears and his middle name. THAT is why the MSM keeps its mouth shut about those things. Can you do something on their dog next?

  • RichmondDem says:

    Shorter Lloyd: IOKIYAR.

  • RichmondDem says:

    Oh, and lookie here:

Yes, he’s using his toddler in a photo op on his campaign website.

  • Did you EVER see Bush do that?

  • Loudoun Insider says:

I really don’t get your comment, ACT, and Lloyd has never been an Obama fan.

  • And you don’t see Romney or Santorum using his family on banner ads on websites or anything akin to Obama’s “Help THE OBAMAS Stand Up For Working Americans” tag line in them (emphasis mine). You really need to see the banner ads. In fact, I updated the post with a pdf of the banner ad. Take a look.

    Totally different.

ACT, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt – it is after 5:00 pm after all.

  • Ben Dover says:

I have to agree with TCJ on this one, Lloyd.

Everyone is going to perceive this differently. Some people will conclude: Family Picture.

You will conclude: Campaign Propaganda (in poor taste).

ACT will conclude: I hate the man whether he has kids and a family, and a Portuguese Water Dog or not (in fact, I’m kind of surprised that nobody has never written about how disloyal Obama is to various American dog breeds, now that I think about it) .

I personally believe that the images of Obama with his family make no difference to anyone – most people have already made up their minds about what they are going to do come November.

And ACT, I hate to break it to you, but Obama is going to win a 2nd term as POTUS, just to piss you off.

  • RBV says:

It’s creepy the way the whole family, including the kids, is on the ad. Why? Why should I join THEM? Can’t Obama stand on his own two feet?

  • Cato the Elder says:

“Obama is going to win a 2nd term as POTUS”

Gonna go a little more like this, Benny:

  • Independent Voter says:

Ben: You’re right about Obama winning a second term. But not for the reason you state: pissing off ACT. He is going to win, overwhelmingly, because he has totally unacceptable candidates running on the GOP ticket–what a bunch of nuts. The GOP establishment is reportedly pooping their pants. Isn’t it entertaining to watch the dynamics of this race?

FWIW, I was an avid Romney supporter but now I’m praying someone else will come out of the wings.

  • ACTivist says:

IV, I will have to say your insight on this is wrong. Last time Barry and I were kicking back at the White House, downing a brewsky, I told him he was toast in this election and that I thought his dog was one ugly hairball. He told me “ACT, I’m going to win just to piss you off AND I’m going to buy another ugly dog” at which time he kicked me out. He’s not a happy drunk.

  • edmundburkenator says:

“You don’t see Romney doing that (plus his kids are older)”…

I saw some photo of him and his grand kids in a convertible somewhere… I’m too tired to remember where.

  • Were his grand kids making policy decisions, too, as suggested by the Obamas banner ad? Hint: answer is “no “

  • NoVA Scout says:

The Obamas seem to have done a good job of protecting their kids against the exposure that can result from life in the White House. I can’t get excited about family pictures in campaign materials. So much other malarkey gets into these things that a pic or two of the wife and kids has to be beneath any level of concern.

  • Will says:

This article has virtually no substance.

  • skeptic says:

You are right. This is grasping for straws.
Let’s get back on Janet Clarke. There is some good material!
