Oh, the Misogyny!

By Lloyd the Idiot

Continuing in our series of posts sure to be labeled uniformed, right-wing and misogynistic, I offer the following from today’s Washington Post in relation to the university professor who saw fit to breast feed a sick child in front of her class on the first day of school.

The American University professor who breast-fed her baby while teaching a class was inappropriate, judgmental and flat-out absurd.

. . .

I’m guessing that nursing lawyers don’t breast-feed while taking depositions and that nursing doctors don’t have infants latched on while seeing patients. That wouldn’t be professional.

I wish Pine had turned over the lectern to her teaching assistant or maybe given the students a short reading assignment while she stepped aside to nurse her daughter to sleep. It would’ve illustrated the superwoman nature of what she was pulling off — work/life balance, the beauty of a woman’s capabilities, her trust in the teaching assistant.

Misogynistic, you say?  Blind to the challenges of working mothers?  Intolerant of  “strong” women?

Hmm.  Maybe you should take it up with the author.  See what she has to say.

Couldn’t she have done this after class? Or perhaps use a blanket to cover things up….or….something?

I’m trying to ignore this story. It seems there may be more than a bit of distortion in the way it has been reported. Initially by the student paper in particular.

What is striking to me though is how many people are ludicrously hung up about breast feeding. It is the 21st century for fuck’s sake and feeding babies is what the Almighty designed breasts for in the first place.

    Why do breasts scare you?

Keep it up. You’re doing a great job getting Obama and Kaine elected.

  • edmundburkenator says:

It’s the unnatural and nontraditional act of this breastfeeding that will harm the traditional one baby, one bottle relationship on which our society was founded.

I expect to see some teabagger Congressman on Fox News within the week repeating that line. Maybe proposing a Constitutional Amendment banning breast feeding in order to “protect” traditional bottle feeding.

It should breeze through the House. I’m sure Boehner can find room on the schedule between the 679th vote to repeal ObamaCare and the resolution declaring that the president is a secret Muslim. It will have lots of support. Nobody makes a dime off breast milk. But those companies that sell formula should be good for lots of campaign contributions.

    Freedom! Liberty!

The religious nuts should be on board. Those damned liberal college professors! Exposing students to the concept of breasts!

And, being Republicans, of course is a Nazi phallic symbol.

Funny post! I read that article this morning and definitely felt like this woman was out of her mind.

  • James Young says:

I read the column, and thought it was quite a reasonable response to the professor’s unreasonable response to her unnecessary public display. I particularly liked her reference to “lactivists.” Her display discredited those many women who breast-feed their babies with a little bit of discretion.

  • I thought this was going to be about Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day.

  • Elder Berry says:

I don’t care at all about her breastfeeding. No big deal.

I care about her bringing a supposedly sick child to class with her. For that either cancel the class and stay home or get a sitter. Sick kids don’t belong in a college classroom.

  • Baron Rosedown says:

Breastfeeding should be done in private. Natural or not – good for the baby…public displays of one’s tits with a kid latched on shouldn’t be done in a classroom, open park, grocery store…etc.
