Where’s Gerry Connolly?

By VA Blogger

Going to Connolly’s website, his most recent press release was the release of his internal poll from mid-July. Six weeks ago. Where’s Gerry?

Unlike previous years and other Congressional candidates, Connolly didn’t attend the DNC Convo in Denver. Where’s Gerry?

Fimian has been on TV for a week now, and is increasing his presence when we get into the post-Labor Day sixty-day sprint. Where’s Gerry?

Even looking at Connolly’s campaign calendar, he has four events total for the months of August, September, and October, and two of them are canvassing run by national Democrats in support of Obama and Warner. The others are a convention watching party and fundraiser at a sushi bar. Where’s Gerry?

Fairfax County is facing a $350 million budget shortfall and an increase in crime, yet we’ve heard nothing from the Chairman about either. Where’s Gerry?

With no active campaigning or paid media, two events in the district, no national presence, dodging questions on energy, and no updates on his website, it’s safe to say that Connolly has put his campaign on hold. He’s allowed local bloggers and the DCCC to push the ridiculous “Fimian is a religious nutjob” angle, while he takes a step back. The question is why?

I can only think of two reasons: He thinks he has the election locked up, which is irresponsibly cocky given the fact it’s an open seat and Fimian’s more recent poll shows the race at four points and McCain leading Obama; or he’s out of money and had trouble fundraising. But even that wouldn’t explain the lack of local events.

So where’s Gerry? Any thoughts?

UPDATE: (12:30 a.m.) When I got home tonight a reader had emailed me: “maybe its due to health problems. gerry smokes a pack a day.” I hadn’t even considered this, but it makes more sense than the two options above. Thoughts?

In the pond with the other toads?

  • T says:

You bring up a good point…

Maybe he’s in the middle of an FBI investigation for accepting bribes from real estate developers?? Or maybe another hit & run?

T got 4 of those mailers from the DCCC last week. All the women on it were extraordinarily ugly. And then there was one with this guy who looked really feminine. Definitely not appealing. Probably all of them were DCCC staff.

Keith Fimian, however, is alive and thriving – so is his campaign & fundraising (as evidenced by his website).

If Gerry isn’t available during the biggest campaign of his life, then how the heck will he lead us in Washington?

  • T says:

PS – I am now lobbying for an updated Too Conservative masthead – one with McCain/Palin, Keith Fimian and Frank Wolf….Huck is definitely not Northern Virginia. John Warner is retiring. Bobby Jindal already got elected.

  • NoVA Scout says:

Connolly is behaving like someone whose polls say that this is wrapped up.

  • RichmondDem says:

    What NoVA Scout said.

Also, Obama is going to have to come down quite a bit in state polling before Fimian has a chance, otherwise his coat tails bring Connolly to victory, particularly since we’re talking about NoVA.

  • T says:

T heard about Connolly’s health problems quite a long time ago. He also suffers from some heart condition (from what a very reliable source told me)…but if Connolly was having health problems to begin with, why would he run for the nomination?

He should have given the nomination to someone who actually was going to try – but then again, none of the candidates in the June primary really tried (turn out was what, 2%?)…he still stands at high negatives. And Fimian, while new to politics (and somewhat clumsy at times), is bright and active.

  • The bigger question to me is “Where’s Fimian?”

Sure I live in the 10th, but I just don’t see much at all from Fimian’s campaign. Time is way too short. Connolly is absolutely vulnerable on manmy fronts, but Fimian has to be all over it from every angle to win this.

Keith is up on TV and is holding events across the district. He’s been talking directly to voters about gas prices and energy concerns. I stopped by their office earlier this week and they were on track with volunteers and phone calls to the “battleground” precincts and demographics they’ve mapped out. They have a pretty impressive operation going on, especially for a first-time candidate in a depressed election cycle for Republicans. They’re in it to win.

Just don’t expect the local media to get a rat’s ass about it.

  • Gus McCrea says:

“gerry smokes a pack a day.”

If this is true, then that’s one more thing that he has in common with Obama.

  • Frank says:

Well he normally is talking to reporters, but he is MIA on the campaign and the $430 million budget shortfall. Was he in Denver?

  • VA Blogger says:

    He was not in Denver.

  • UNC-G says:

Man, some of you guys sound like a bunch of nervous desperados- speaking of ailing health, would not John McCain befit that description with four, count ’em four, bouts of cancer ? -talking to people about high gas & energy prices ? why are they high in the first place – a lot of it has to do with the policies of the Republican regime. Some of you guys just don’t wanna own up to that big, fat, giant, WHITE elephant that’s sitting in the smack dab middle of the room that YOUR PARTY put there !
