Taking a Break

By Loudoun Insider

Work has been very busy lately, and I must admit I simply cannot stand the new look of the site.  Neither can any of my regular readers.  Sorry Vincent and VAB, but I’ve always been a straight shooter on all topics here.  Hopefully some revisions will be made when I’m ready to come back.

  • kelley in virginia says:

does this mean you’ll have to shut it down for a long time?

i like a preview option so i can clean up grammatical errors to the best of my ability.

i also like a time stamp to see how late Bleeder stays up to harrass us! (ha to you, bleeder!).

but other than that, you’ve got great content, great readers. thank you.

  • RichmondDem says:

I’d like to know how to create paragraph breaks in the comments area of the new site.

I can’t seem to do it, and this makes it harder to read peoples comments (including mine) without getting a headache.

  • Dan says:

Enjoy your break. Don’t stay gone too long.

I concur with your opinion of the new look. Kelley and RichmondDem make solid suggestions for improvements too.

  • edmundburkenator says:

So sad about the new look now. RD is right about paragraph breaks. They are impossible. The gravatars are stupid and the FPPs are hard to read. This is, after all, about READING.

Hope your break isn’t a long one LI.

  • VA Bloger says:

While I’ve been able to find a way to manually insert paragraph breaks, I haven’t yet been able to do it in comments.
Unless you use something gimmicky like a period.
    Or an underscore.

  • Enjoy the break LI!

Regarding site design: some people like it, some people don’t.

I happen to to like it, although I agree the big bird should go.

All this costs $$ to change, something as a poor college student I don’t have.

I will get changes made when I can.

  • BlackOut says:

If you paid for this Vincent you got ripped off. I’d raise hell and ask for your money back. You could get some high school kid to do a better job than this. And it ain’t just about the bird.
Although I do applaud your effort to jettison the Palin pic.

  • Dan says:

Now that we are all finished complaining about something that involves no effort on our parts, let me say that it is content that matters. And the content here has been superior. Thanks for your effort.

  • edmundburkenator says:

No effort on our parts? Blogs are successful for a number of reasons, one being the community of commenters. This community argues, agrees, challenges, takes the high road, the low road, loves and hates within a little space on the intenet called Too Consernative. Bitching about or complementing what that little space looks like or how it works seems ok to do.

  • VA Bloger says:

I agree with EB. I think our front-page posters do a good job (if I do say so myself), but what makes TC a great site is our active and compelling (for the most part) discussions in the comments. No where else in Virginia do you see the kind of comment threads we have here. NLS routinely has long ones, but not as lengthy as ours can go, and we have much better quality with far fewer trolls.

  • RichmondDem says:

The trolls at NLS are especially horrible because they can change their screen names with total impunity. If a troll keeps the same screen name, eventually you just ignore them and scroll-filter as soon as you see the name. But if they use 1,000 nyms a week it becomes impossible.

  • Not John S. Mosby says:

This new layout looks like the work of Log Cabin Republicans, did Vince or VA Blogger go Larry Craig on us or something?

  • Alter of Freedom says:

Overcome, Improvise and Adapt—sure we were all familiar with the old layout, but the new layout has its merits. Hopefully LI will return and remain engaged with the blogging community here. His voice is a valued one.

  • The site design isn’t that bad – it just needs to be tighten up a bit and some minor issues fixed. Otherwise, I can live with it.

Vincent, you should put a donate tab on the front page and let folks help contribute to the upkeep of the site. I know many of us would be willing to help out with the costs in order to keep the site running smoothly.

  • Not John S. Mosby says:

GLAAD’s website isn’t as gay-looking as this one is.

  • Brittney says:

I love the new site! Great job Vincent! As a fellow college student myself I understand about money issues. Keep up the good work!

  • Loudoun Moderate says:

The fact that Sarah Palin has gone makes me a fan of the new design. I’m not crazy about the Bluebird of Happiness though. The idea of a donate here tab to help defray the costs of maintaining the site is not a bad idea–I’ll chip in.

  • Alter of Freedom says:

Given the totality of the comments by NJSM and contributions here at Too Conservative over the last few months I think its safe to say that he is simply the Maxine Waters of the community here. And what would our Congress be without good old Maxine?

  • BlackOut says:

Not sure if this a product of the new site or lack of admin support, but I posted a comment early this afternoon that went into moderation. I’ve not seen it released yet. Either someone isn’t paying attention or they didn’t like my criticism of the new site.

Out of all you can say about LI, he at least was always very diligent about releasing posts from moderation or delegating that authority to others.

  • Lovettsville Lady says:

I have to agree with LI. I don’t like the new format at all. I wish we could have the old one back. At least time stamps. Also agree on the donations. I would donate, especially if it meant we could have the old format back.

  • VA Blogger says:

BlackOut, I just released all comments from moderation. Our old site seemed to have a perfect spam filter that let out all legit comments and blocked everything else, but now we’re getting a steady mix of legit comments and spam in our filter.
I just got used to months of not having to worry about it, but I will be more diligent going forward.

  • NoVA Scout says:

There was a long period at the old site when every one of my comments was held up in moderation. It wasn’t a big deal – they all got out eventually. I haven’t had a problem with it here.

I like the look of the re-do, and find the color scheme cheerful, but agree with those who would favor a somewhat darker font for text. The big bird I think is what is putting people off. I’ve never thought twitter to be a great advance in the political blogging world. But then again, I’m a very old guy and wasn’t that keen on switching from dipping pen nibs in an inkwell to using a reservoir fountain pen, either.

  • BlackOut says:

Thank you VA Blogger. I know how the filter can be a pain. I also know how spam can be a pain. It’s a big catch 22. I good efficient filter is to cherish.
Haha, NoVA Scout good analogy. But I would guess you now wouldn’t want to go back to the inkwells. Can you imagine having to go back to TVs without remotes?

  • G. Stone says:

The site needs to be more interactive. Can we add a feature where we shoot the little blue bird ?

  • BlackOut says:

Stoner, it already is. Take out one of your guns, aim it at the little birdie on the monitor…and shoot. If you miss try again. Tell us how you do.

  • Leej says:

BlackOut maybe you are your meds again, 😉 but you really are making me laugh these days in a good way. This is the fun and good BlackOut 😉

  • Leej says:

Oh why I am at it help your buddy monk I think he has gone over the edge and to the dark side. 😉

  • NoVA Scout says:

BlackOut: What’s a “TV”? And what is remote about them?
