How many Kings, Emperors and other potentates is Obama going to make his obeisance before? Does anyone else find it as galling as I do to see the leader of the free world groveling before royalty?
.
Apparently the Emperor of Japan bows to no one, but the President of the United States bows to anyone.

Contrast this with the greeting Akihito received from Vice President Cheney:

on November 14th, 2009That’s not a bow. It looks more like a prayer. Besides, the pope isn’t royalty. He’s elected.

Or, perhaps he does know our history but doesn’t like it, part of the “America’s Always Wrong” crowd.
Lovettsville Lady
on November 14th, 2009JM that looks like prayer. I know you guys don’t believe in God and all that shit, which would explain your confusion but I’ll explain. It’s a primitive custom amongst us to bow our heads when talking to our creator. It’s very similar to what you might do if the ghost of Che Guevara or Karl Marx appeared before you, so please try to have a bit of sensitivity.

on November 14th, 2009On another matter, has anyone been able to secure one of those nifty “ObaMao” buttons that are all the rage in China??

on November 15th, 2009Monk, I read somewhere yesterday that the Chinese government was confiscating all those because it was insulting to Mao.

on November 15th, 2009What an idiot! Didn’t he learn anything from George H.W. Bush? The proper protocol when dealing with Japanese leaders is to vomit on them, of course.
RichmondDem
on November 15th, 2009They confiscated those shirts because it would offend American sensibilities. All it does is show the Chinese are really clueless about some things.
RichmondDem
on November 15th, 2009Just to be clear, the Chinese making such shirts shows they’re clueless, not the government confiscating them. Apparently a lot of people in China don’t understand that in the United States it isn’t a compliment to be compared to Mao. They were trying to be friendly because they see Mao the same way we see George Washington, while we see Mao as a dictator and murderer.
RichmondDem
on November 15th, 2009“confiscating all those because it was insulting to Mao.”
I’m inclined to believe that!! Funny as hell, in that the guy who came up with it was actually excersizing Capitalism…if it hadn’t dawned on him.
The irony is deep on that one.
RD….I adore your attempt to distance the President from the image of a communist, even though every day takers us further and further down that road.
The Bulletproof Monk
on November 15th, 2009If only Obama was more like Cheney… Just imagine how many more endless overseas wars we could start. You’ve got to admit though, you must be glad that Obama didn’t accidentally shoot the guy, right?
Buffy
on November 15th, 2009Nice shoes emporer, can you turn around so I can kiss your ass now….what a moron. I also heard he didn’t put his hand over heart during playing of national anthem (all other leaders did)… not sure if this was just the biginning and he didnt have time yet, but the pic shows all leaders with hand over heart or saluting with the exception of ours. Obama doesn;t represent this American at all….

Perhaps President Obama will apologize to the Emperor of Japan that the sounds of exploding battleships on Sunday, December 7, 1941 was awfully loud and might have hurt the delicate eardrums of Imperial Japanese Navy pilots while they were on their “peace mission” to Pearl Harbor.
This guy make Neville Chamberlain look like John Wayne.

on November 16th, 2009Shouldn’t he have staffers to tell him what to do? Why does he keep making these boneheaded mistakes?
Loudoun Insider
on November 16th, 2009LI, the staffers think this is okay.
Brian S
on November 16th, 2009If Obama understood economics the way Cheney does…we wouldn’t be kneedeep in the sewers of an overbloated taxation scheme….I’ll guarantee that!
Look, the Office of the Prez SHOULD have a CULTURAL ATTACHE, and a PROTOCOL office isn’t too much to ask for either. First year diplomats know more about proper protocol than this joke of a “leader”
The Bulletproof Monk
on November 16th, 2009re Michael’s comment: what IS the appropriate action during the national anthem? I was always taught that civilians should stand at respectful attention during the Star Spangled Banner and that the hand over the heart was for the Pledge of Allegiance. Was that wrong, or did it change somewhere in the mists of time since I was a little guy in grade school?
Re this bowing stuff (it was the Saudi King the last time), I agree with Brian – Obama’s staffers aren’t getting this right. I used to travel to Japan a lot, and etiquette there is quite ritualized. A dignified 30 degree bow is considered to be basic politeness. Had Obama stopped there (even though the Emperor does not bow) I would have considered him to be doing nothing more than what any sensible American would do when meeting an important business associate. But this bow looks like an almost 90 degree job. Quite a bit too much, guys. Better staff work starting now, please.
NoVA Scout
on November 16th, 2009Did Obama bow like that to the Queen of England? Or did he just give her a pat on the rump?
Wolverine
on November 16th, 2009NoVa Scout – I don’t know what proper protocal is, but i was taught hand over heart, hat off for the National Anthem. I beleive most public figures do this (remember photo of democrat primary where O was only candidate not with hand on heart…). I think most players do this prior to games, etc…
Michael
on November 17th, 2009For the anthem, the more stuff you can do (hat off, hand over heart, don’t cover your flag pin, don’t screw up the words, salute with other hand) means you are more patriotic than the guy next to you who happens to be holding you up because of all the pregame beer you drank in the parking lot.

Edmundburkenator
on November 17th, 2009I was always taught that you stand, hand on the heart. Uniformed military hand salute, out of uniform or former military stand at attention. I don’t think there’s any set way, but there’s generally a “when in Rome” cultural more on this – everyone else on the stage was either saluting or hand-over-heart, so I can the complaints.
.
The bow here is way over the top, which is why the Japanese haven’t been showing it at all on their TV.
Brian S
on November 17th, 2009Funny you should mention that, as we enter our THIRTEENTH Trillion. Do tell about deficits, since Obama officially owns the largest one in relation to the GDP we’ve ever seen. Go right ahead and explain it, there, Edmund.
The Bulletproof Monk
on November 17th, 2009Hand over heart is a civilian salute. And the ‘ol ball cap over the heart (in baseball) tells me that the civilian salute should be used during the song.
Bonus: Military = no cover/no salute.

there are deficits then there are deficits. is it your contention that the current situation is OK ? a deficit that is costing us 500m a day in interest. Put all the political spin and horse shit aside. math is math. economics is currently being turned upside down by the current administration. I don’t care how bad the previous group screwed it up. using that as an excuse or political cover to do the same times 10 is beyond asinine. to make the case the current group is can find their ass with both hands as far as economics goes is folly. the current path in unsustainable.

Here is a pretty simple rule of thumb, no staff required. The President of the United States of America, a country having successfully divorced itself from a monarchy, should never bow to a monarch. A shake of the hand coupled with slight head nod is proper protocol if the monarch in question is a from a country deemed by the U.S. as an ally. Let the Europeans spend the day bowing to one another based on hundreds of years of tangled royal lineage.

Yes, and let me thank you for having assisted putting us on the current path. Americans by the millions are realizing they were had. They now want a political do over, after realizing that, Yes We Can, is actually We haven’t a Clue. However, much damage can and will be be done between now and the time some grown ups get back into the room .The current president being in way over his head, tonight will float the idea of a double dip recession, no shit Hopey changey. His Sec. of the Treasury will be gone within the next 30 days after revelations of utter incompetence capped by continuous poor judgment resulting in the improper allocation of billions of dollars, opps. But then we knew that 9 months ago didn’t we.
