The Herrity campaign has released a new poll by the Tarrance Group of 400 likely GOP primary voters. With 37% undecided, Pat Herrity leads Keith Fimian 42% to 21% – double Fimian’s percentage in the race. A copy of the publicly released portion of the poll can be found here.
.
As the poll notes, these numbers are driven by far more than simply Herrity’s greater name ID – Herrity leads Fimian by 16 points with GOP primary voters who know both candidates and have an impression of both candidates.
.
A couple of other important things that came out in the poll. Of these voters, 81% approve of Bob McDonnell’s handling of his job as Governor – which seems pretty low to me. These are all GOP primary voters, so I’m surprised to see the number that low.
.
The poll was taken the week before the health insurance reform bill passed, so the top three issues voters were concerned about were “health care reform” followed by “spending,” and “jobs.”
.
Pat’s poll was done by the Tarrance Group, one of the best Republican pollsters out there. I’ve worked with groups that have used them in the past, particularly Brian Tringali, who teaches at my alma mater, the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.
.
This is an interesting poll and I’m sure this race will start to heat up as June 8th steadily approaches.

For what it’s worth, McLaughlin & Associates, Fimian’s pollster, is also a great GOP polling firm and very well-regarded. As we move forward, I want to make sure people understand that both camps are using sound methodologies by respected firms, in order to avoid people running their mouths about something they know nothing about.

I liked how one of the subgroups in the poll was identified as “habitual” Fox watchers.
.
Do they offer rehab for that? Or maybe some sort of patch like they have for those trying to quit smoking?
I think they keep those patches in the same aisle as with the Democratic talking-points 12 step cessation program booklets.
I admit to watching Fox on a semi regular basis. It really is more like a hallucinogen. Sometimes those hallucinations are very interesting and stimulating. But they don’t often look like reality. I don’t think addicts could be helped by something as simple as a patch.
.
On topic. Does this poll really surprise anyone? It is hardly shocking that Herrity is well ahead. Except to the hardcore Fimian folks.
.
I still hold out hope for a Fimian comeback though. Get to work guys! Make it happen!
“I think they keep those patches in the same aisle as with the Democratic talking-points 12 step cessation program booklets.”
*
Wrong. They keep those behind the counter with the Thorazine.
Thorazine. I used to swear they had an aide whose job it was to shoot Reagan with a Thorazine dart whenever he deviated from the script. He was great on script though.
.
I am talking the second term here. Not so much when he was younger.
.
Before the Reagan worshipers unsheath their machetes let me say that I felt as warmly toward Reagan as Tip O’Neill did. He was a great guy. But, objectively, he did lose a step late in the game.
“he did lose a step late in the game.”
.
and his mind too…..
Back on topic again. Herrity will make this an interesting race. This will be a fun one to watch. I would still bet on Connolly, but this will be a horse race I believe.
.
You sure you guys don’t want to nominate Fimian instead?
local gop, don’t go there. Alzheimer’s is no fun. I have experienced it through a close loved one and it is not an easy road. I feel for the Reagan family for what they went through and for anyone else in the same boat.
.
Humor is needed when dealing with it. I still laugh about the day I was driving my mother-in-law who had Alzheimer’s over to familiarize her with what would be her new home. She asked me if I was sure I knew where I was going.
.
If you can’t laugh about getting directions from the Alzheimer’s patient what can you laugh at.
.
But don’t cross the line into making fun. It is a brutal disease that robs people of a lot of dignity. They don’t need to be mocked.
Local can’t help it – someone mentions Reagan – he is the first one cutting him down. Because he is a democrat and apparently reads from the same blogs as Dan. Now watch as Local attacks me for being a brain-dead Reagan robot! Yippee!
Dan, Alzheimers is no laughing matter. I agree with your post.
lighten up. didnt you defend marshall and his comments??
LL,
has nothing to do with reagan, contrary to your belief. nice try again though. of course you’re a good conservative and follow lock step so i’m sure you think reagan is the 2nd coming.
” of course you’re a good conservative and follow lock step so i’m sure you think reagan is the 2nd coming”
*
Thank you for proving my point! “Nice try” is your favorite answer – which is ironic because you seem to always display what I point out on your own.
*
Further, it figures you don’t agree with anything Reagan stood for because (for the 129th time), you are a democrat.
Where did I say i didnt agree with anything reagan stood for?
Ok Local, what do you agree with? Obviously you think his mind was gone somewhere in his second term, what else? From your past ramblings, Reagan would be a natural anathema to you.
This is not how I anticipated this thread going.
Me either.
.
Not one single Fimian paid blogger here to attack me as a good ole’ boy. Instead we’re arguing about Reagan being senile. Ah, the internets.
I expected better. Perhaps you should have been more incendiary?
I don’t know about “paid” Fimian bloggers but ita toughs wheb Pat’s are from FCRC.
Apparently Chris uses the same spellcheck on his comments that he does on his blog.
LL
If Local was the only one here, he would be arguing with himself. Stop wasting your time.
Herrity wins by a comfortable margin and goes on to beat the Toad.
Just to make you feel good Brian:
*
Herrity couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag! Connelly will eat his limbs for breakfast and give the rest to Pelosi for lunch! Fimian is the true conservative!
There we go, LL. That’s what I want to see.
Brian, when are you posting McDonnell’s Confederate thing. That will be good for some fireworks!
I’m not. The last thing I am going to do is give you guys a platform to call all of us racists and bigots. We aren’t.
.
McDonnell apologized and added slavery to the proclamation. Issue resolved.
Why is Fimian on the banner (if that is what it is called)?
“Brian, when are you posting McDonnell’s Confederate thing.”
*
Ed, you’ve got the wrong blog. Brian’s Marxist outreach project is —–> that way.
It truly is odd that the Fimian legions didn’t show up in force. You know, with the usual “Herrity is a RINO who held his campaign kickoff at a COUNTRY CLUB and couldn’t handle the classless way Fimian reacted to his announcement and is a puppet being manipulated by Tom Davis” stuff.
.
They must have been given the day off.
Dorothy, your guess is as good as mine.
.
I agree, Dan. We haven’t had a single person, let alone a single person posing as three, protest that this poll is false and evil. Must be the good weather. Everyone’s on the golf course.
LL,
i never attacked reagan, an off the cuff comment that he went senile is hardly an attack. i agreed with his deregulation, his economic policy, and his foreign policy. i dont agree that he was the greatest president, or that he was single handily responsible for the collapse of the USSR. a good president, yes. a great president, no. i think a lot of his legacy was the product of being in the right place at the right time, as it is when you get that high up in politics. its called the cyclical theory of politics [i believe]. but that’s just fancy book learnin’.
“i dont agree that he was the greatest president, or that he was single handily responsible for the collapse of the USSR.”
.
local gop, you have the first part right. Reagan was not our greatest president. As anyone who watches the Colbert Report can tell you, George W. Bush was our greatest president.
.
You are a little foggy on your history though when it comes to the second part. John Wayne single handedly beat the Japanese and won the war in the Pacific for us and then the commies became our mortal enemy. Ronald Reagan then rode in on a white horse and single handedly defeated the commies.
.
You are obviously a victim of slanted “liberal” history that would have you believe that presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter and George H.W. Bush played a part in the fall of the Soviet Union. Not to mention all the soldiers, diplomats, intelligence officers and countless others who are alleged to have played a part in this decades long struggle by the biased “liberal” history texts that the socialist schools made you read.
.
I assure you, it was all Ronald Reagan.
“but that’s just fancy book learnin’.” Local, nothing you type even remotely resembles fancy book learnin. Just sayin.
*
And I see Dan agreeing with you yet again. Congratulations for 459th time on your party affiliation.
Loudoun Lady, so you disagree that George W. Bush was the greatest president in our history? That was the line for so long. You mean it has changed? It is hard to keep up with you guys. You are just like the Stalinists. From the non-aggression pact until the Nazi invasion of Russia the Stalinists argued that America must stay out of the war in Europe. Once the Nazis invaded Russia they were advocating immediate intervention by the U.S. and a second front as soon as possible if not sooner. For eight years you guys told me George W. Bush was the greatest president in our history. Now he is vilified by conservatives. A person could get whiplash trying to keep up with these sudden turns by folks on the right!
.
I hope the opinion that Reagan single handedly won the Cold War hasn’t changed. You have to maintain at least some consistency.
.
Isn’t that why it was so important that the federal government forced Metro to spend money changing all those signs that read “National Airport” to read “Reagan National Airport”? Because he won the Cold War all by himself? That and the supposed “confusion” that would have resulted from failing to change the signs.
.
I don’t know how we managed to find our way to RFK stadium all those years when the signs only read “Stadium/Armory”. Must be a Republican thing.
.
Anyway, please make up your danged mind who the greatest president was. We know it can’t be Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt because they are out of favor with right wingers as advocates of big government and progressivism. But if you have switched from W. back to Reagan again please send out a memo or something so others can keep up with whatever the current conservative mythology is.
LL,
its called bipartisanship.
Good One Local! It’s called being a closet liberal, welcome to reality.
*
Dan, I’m not arguing with you, I merely pointed out Local agrees with you 90% of the time. Embrace him, he is your brethren.
Cato, I don’t read that blog. Is it really Marxist???
.
Brian, I would think the post would give you the opportunity for clarifying statements and…
.
You’re right.
.
It would be too easy.
LL,
yes, i dont tend to agree with wackos….guess that’s why we disagree.
Local, If you concur that you agree with Dan 90% of the time, you are 90% liberal. I don’t care if you agree or disagree with me, as I have some very principled disagreements with those in my own party. You aren’t one of those people.
*
I’ll remember the wacko comment, since you like to make remarks about me calling people names. I call you a democrat and a liberal, you call me a wacko – typical behavior of the left.
LL,
i would consider anyone who actually believes the best way to fix a budget problem is to just pick a random page and cut is either a moron, or too much of a right wing wacko for their own good.
.
i believe in the radical leftist philosophy that you have to analyse before you cut. if that makes me a liberal, so be it.
Did anyone else notice how extremely conservative Fimian suddenly claimed to be after Pat got in the race? I don’t recall Fimian being ultra conservative when he ran before or this year, prior to Pat’s entry into the race. Pat’s a true conservative, always has been. G. Stone is right, Pat will win easily in June and beat Connelly like a drum in November.
Lovettsville Lady
Fimian sent out mailers in 2008 highlighting his pro-life stance, very few Republicans would do that – even in a good year.
There is a reason very few republicans would do that, it’s a bad idea in this area. if you remember, connolly slammed him on it and he will do it again because he can turn it into a scare tactic.
Local, I don’t even know what you are talking about, which is a common thing for most people I’m sure. Duly noted that you infer I am a moron and called me a wacko.
LL,
which post are you talking about? The post about fimian?
“LL,
i would consider anyone who actually believes the best way to fix a budget problem is to just pick a random page and cut is either a moron, or too much of a right wing wacko for their own good.
.
i believe in the radical leftist philosophy that you have to analyse before you cut. if that makes me a liberal, so be it.”
I distinctly remember you making the comment that instead of looking at an impact of a cut to a budget and taking time to analyze it, you sometimes just have to make a ‘principled’ decision and start cutting. essentially, cut and hope it works.
local, please stop calling LL a principled moron.
Never said it, no matter how distinct your memory.
*
I agree with Eddie – being called a moron is bad enough, but a principled one – ppfffft!
LL,
yes you did. because i was utterly shocked that anyone would be stupid enough to actually admit that, perhaps you simply misunderstood me or assumed that i meant something worse than i did…wouldn’t be the first time.
Local, Find and prove it. I don’t even know what the hell you are talking about. You being “utterly shocked” is laughable, you are utterly ridiculous most of the time and people just give up.
*
What you think I say and what I actually say are usually worlds apart, I guess all your “smart book learnin” is causing your brain to work super special hard in your super secret bat cave – or you are just full of bat shit.
