Liz Miller Completely DESTROYS Andrea McGimsey

By Loudoun Insider

  • Loudoun Insider says:

For those who won’t click on the link, here are Liz’s bullet points:

It’s because I’ve watched her repeatedly treat county staff badly.
It’s because she treats her staff aides like garbage (she’s now on her 11th in 3 years). I’ve heard this directly from several of her staff aides, and they all tell the same stories.
It’s because she is often unprepared for meetings.
It’s because she blames her other job for the fact that she is unprepared.
It’s because she voted against Ches. Bay. (Cliff probably would have too, but it’s a real departure for Andrea), and she left CBPO supporters in the cold.
It’s because she really doesn’t have the time or the temperament for the job, she knows it, she declares it from the dais, and yet she’s running for it again.

Like I said – ouch! As they say, this will leave a mark.

  • Leej says:

I agree with everything Liz says. And Cliff will win and he will be one of our best supervisors ever. He has done a superb job as planning commissioner.

  • Observatory says:

That’s aggressive. Is the staff aide thing true?

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Oh yeah. I wasn’t kidding before when I said there is an Ex-McGimsey Aides AGAINST McGimsey PAC forming. Well, there isn’t really an official PAC, but there are quite a few who will be seen and heard from as this campaign progresses. They are all working hard against her – she’s a complete monster with her aides. Monitor the blogs, feed the cats, fetch the dry cleaning, etc. etc. All in the life of a McGimsey aide, all while getting screamed at. A real horror show.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

I heard an interesting one that, in printing out driving directions for her to the various meetings and conferences she runs around to, aides got called and reamed from the road if there was no specification on where to turn to park.

The woman can’t park her own car without staff support?

I’m prepared to believe it, but I’m ME, after all! lol

  • Loudoun Street says:

Every word on the Liz Miller post and this post is true, period. The McGimsey Reign of Terror at the Government Center must stop. She is abusive to County staff and especially her aides. Review the webcasts of Board meetings–a montage of clips could easily be made of her yelling at staff, saying she doesn’t have time to read materials, can’t be bothered to learn how to work an iPad to know the correct page, despite going to MIT and working at AOL, which she frequently mentions. Citizens have noticed this abusive behavior and emailed the BOS!

Persons from every side of the political aisle have tried to speak with her about her behavior, but she refuses to acknowledge any wrong doing. Such denial is to a pathological degree, sadly. The appropriate thing for McGimsey to do is cease her re-election bid, focus on one job and taking care of her issues.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

She needs that voting credential, unfortunately, and the money that backs her does so with that in mind.

If she weren’t a member of the LoCo BoS with committee assingments, could she go to the conferences on energy with as much “clout” and get as much press for the crony deals on the side?

Could she be featured in German embassy magazines as the person responsible for passage of the first Comprehensive Energy Plan in the United States (funny, I missed the evil hyperventilating CPAM process on that. Stupid me, I thought it was just a grant request), just in time for the Copenhagen conference?

That’s why a district was drawn for her, and why she is running again (and why there will be inherent conflicts on occasion with her Oatlands day job).

It’s an important credential, and it has a vote.

    Scary, that.

  • Leej says:

Barbara remember political power corrupts and corrupts absolutely so many times. And what kind of tantrums is McG throwing right now as she reads all this. πŸ˜‰ I hate to say this but I met her once at a function and she was very charming πŸ˜‰ I give Liz two thumbs up for exposing this abuse of power. thanks Liz And now McG should be forced to resign. Much less run again. I bet we will hear on from the organizations she has been associated with are going to distance themselves from her like the plague she is. my guess oatlands will be first. It will be interesting at the next BOS meeting that if she shows how she will be squirming in her seat. Or maybe we will see a total breakdown. It comes back to me somebody said when she first got elected McG was mentally unstable and it will undo her. I think it was on too conservative where that was said. πŸ˜‰

  • Barbara Munsey says:

Lee, I think the person who pegged it as potentially pathological (Loudoun Street?) is on the right track.

In which case, some of it may not technically be her “fault”.

I know some Dems who have said over the years that she doesn’t quite register other people, as in looks through them, doesn’t retain names, cuts them off or speaks over them, etc. That may be a devotion of perhaps scarce personal resources to the people she needs to cultivate in order to get done what she needs to get done at any given moment.

Doesn’t change the fact that politics is a people business, and in ANY business one of the stupidest things you can do is abuse staff. Funny how fast your appointments can get out of hand if you treat the receptionist like pond scum, isn’t it?

That Oatlands appointment is pretty recent, so I don’t think the behavior went unnoticed in the process.

What it tells me, from both the political standpoint and the private job standpoint, is that a certain sector of the special interest spectrum has an extremely limited pool to choose from.

  • Leej says:

Interesting what you say Barbara. I the years the most successful business people I know always had what I call a business wife. A girl, woman that could anticipate every whim her boss but really like a partner needed. And even thou they could kid the respect was there. And the wonderful thing is the so called business wife stayed and many are still there even 40 or 50 years later. And these business wives were treated very well financially and many other ways. And for the few around here who have there minds in the gutter πŸ˜‰ There was never a sexual or extremely rarely a sexual relationship. And I know a bunch to this day that is how real business people act. Respect for the people that help them the most.

I believe oatlands and many others will and are going to dump her like a hot potato. This story Liz broke about a abusive public official has legs. We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg what is going to be reported in the media.
And we all know the media thrives on this kind of thing πŸ˜‰ Especially about very public people. And it gets worse because she runs around like a goodie
two shoes. Nobody will buy her as the person that is going to save the world pretending she is greenie weimer. Opps I mean a greenie when she treats her people that way. And I give Liz great credit for exposing McG for who she really is. Which is in my mind a self serving, her first, and a abusive power
crazy bitch. Nope this story is just unraveling for the non politicals. πŸ˜‰ The local press is going to be all over it soon now that Liz exposed McG

  • Loudoun Street says:

Here are some factsβ€”find the webcasts at if you want a play by play.

BOS Meeting on November 3, 2010 (time stamp 00:19:00β€”during Board Comment) McGimsey scolds her aide for bringing her a document to the dias (which no doubt she would have blamed the aide for not bringing if she had not).

BOS Meeting on April 19, 2011 (time stamp 02:37:40β€”discussion of financing of Dulles Rail) McGimsey complains about her inability to β€œdig in” to the material presented because she cannot attend the Finance Committee which is held during the day. At least 3 or 4 other BOS members have jobs outside of their Board duties, including Kelly Burk who is a teacher!

These are just two examples of her behavior–look through more webcasts and you will find hours of exposing footage no doubt.

  • DC Beltway Bandit says:

McGimsey is known to “Stockholm” her aides.

Her mental and verbal abuse towards her aides is reflected in how many she has burned through, 11+ aides in less than 3 years. I don’t know what type of mental issues she may have, but is is painfully obvious she is unfit for public office.

I think citizen should create a drinking game. Do a shot every time McGimsey says one of the following statements from the dais; “I don’t understand, where are we or I’m not prepared”

    McGimsey is an utter embarrassment.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

I was told at one point that the LTM was doing a story on supervisors and their aides. Somehow that never appeared. I guess she has a special connection there.

The ex-aides will all be singing loud and clear soon enough. I don’t know why she ever decided to run for re-election. This will completely destroy her personal reputation.

  • Eyespy Loudoun says:

Apparently, McG is not the only one who has gone through some aides on the Board. Rumor has it that one other Board member who has been around for a while has been abusive to his aides and gone through a number of them. This person has a reputation of getting up in the face of aides and other board members as a way of physically intimidating them and threatening them physically. This is to the point that criminal charges could be brough against them. Apparently, this person has been taped on video in the back hallway behind the dias yelling at another female board member inches from her face. I suspect it will be released shortly before the election. There are multiple such instances and recordings. It should be interesting to see if these get released.

  • Loudoun Street says:

From Liz Miller’s blog comments section:

She talks badly of other supervisors and candidates, and warns her new aides not to “trust” them. I wonder how the taxpayers feel knowing that she wasted their money by ordering county staff find her apartment, negotiate it’s terms, and move her – TWICE?

    June 26, 2011 1:00 AM

This seems in line with everything else that happens in that office, so it should be investigated. Using County resources to secure an apartment?? Also, someone should FOIA McGimsey’s expense reports for the last three years. I’m sure many dollars have been spent on various questionable line items.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

Come on, Eyespy, quit pussyfooting around and name him. No one else has come anywhere near close to McGimsey’s record for burning through aides.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

I can think of more than one male supe over the years who was accused of this, some of whom are no longer supes.

Big difference between happening to be male, tall and deep-voiced, and having a personality disorder that leads to a pattern of systemic problems.

Can anyone think of any supervisor over the years who has not raised their voice at least once, lost their cool over an issue?

There isn’t a one who has burned through staff like Ms. McG, and what’s being referenced here in this thread is not the occasional flash of temper or passionate disagreement, but a history of consistent dysfunction.

  • DC Beltway Bandit says:

I agree with you, from time to time all of the Supervisors may have lost their temper with Staff or their aides. But McGimsey seems to get some sick pleasure in abusing her aides on a hear daily basis. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of McGimsey’s aides feel as if they have PTSD.

LI: I too had heard the LTM planned on a series of stories.

Eyespy: I call BS on your comment. Prove us wrong and produce the video or provide the name.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

Here’s an interesting link to a real world he said/she said:

Maybe this will go to “duelling press releases”. Or campaign lit.

  • RWN says:

The good news is there is an alternative to McGimsey. His name is Sean Williams. He has a broad range of support from the county and the district including current Broad Run Sup. Lori Waters as well as Congressman Wolf. If you ever met Sean, I think it’s safe to say he’s not they type that would disparage staff as McGimsey has. As a former Marine, you know discipline and respect is embedded in his blood.

  • Patriot says:

RWN apparently you haven’t heard the infamous sean Williams voice mails.

  • Loudoun Watcher says:

For clarity’s sake, it’s SHAWN Williams, not Sean.

  • Loudounite says:

Re Shawn endorsements — REALLY? Wow, big surprise that R’s are endorsing the only R candidate to run in a district. Who else would they endorse with the darn “purity pledges”? We are nothing more than a good ole’ boys club, and it’s driving people away. Endorsements aren’t worth the bytes in cyberspace they take up. Donations from candidates to other candidates are also not worth anything — they shouldn’t even be counted as income. They are nothing but back scratching (you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours) to drive up the numbers and make a candidate appear to be better than they are. What is more telling is when an R received D money or emdorsenents, or vice-versa. Oh, but wait, PURITY PLEDGES keep people from endorsing or backing who they truly think is a better candidate, less thay screw themselves politically forever!

  • Leej says:

Shawn stopped by our home awhile back and seems like a nice enough guy. But Cliff has the experience and has done a hell of a job as planning commissioner. Cliff is well liked by almost everyone. Cliff is also very dedicated. Funny story; I was talking to Cliff the other day. And I said Cliff get rid of that “”””I am doing my community service””””” Jeez Cliff everyone running for office says that. Get another saying. Then I am thinking he is one of the few that truly means it and walks his talk. Well while am thinking that and about to say the same thing to him, he beats me to it saying that first. I broke out laughing and said that I was just thinking that. Anyway Cliff is one of the few that deserves and truly means he is doing his community service.

And who would think sweet little Liz would so powerfully come out and just say what everyone in the know wanted to say in such a powerful way. Great job Liz, and I hope you never get mad at me. ha ha ha

You know when Stevens Miller in his first couple of years in office he really started to bug me, and it pissed me off. Because I was so dedicated for him to get elected. I will tell you what in the last year or so both the Millers have impressed me so much I wish he was running again. πŸ™‚ But we will have one of the best Supervisor ever in Cliff. If miller and cliff were both running I would not be able to chose. Of course that would be impossible for the to happen ha ha πŸ˜‰ But it would be interesting ok that is the little devil in me.

I can say one thing for certain if McG does keep running for BOS and when she loses. That will totally crush her from anything in politics again and any credibility to do anything period. People will run from her like a hot potato and if they don’t they will go down to. McG is more suited to third world Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi style politics.

Looks like the McG story is going to get far worse for her, especially if she does not resign and not run for a second term. Actually she might think about going over to Libya and see what she can do for Gadhafi πŸ˜‰ But like Gadhafi she is such a ego maniac she does not even see her world caving in. But like Gadhafi she will most likely not cut and run and then suffer the consequences.

I will end there is now a international arrest warrant for Kadhafi. Hmmmmm

  • Barbara Munsey says:

As for “sweet little Liz”, Lee, is she strong? Is she determined? Does she put all of her efforts toward what she decides on? Does she speak her mind?

If she left the Democratic committee over this (in part. The attacks on herself and her husband too!) then she’s all in. I’m not surprised she spoke her mind. At all.

  • Leej says:

Barbara it comes down to the big picture. The details really don’t matter at this point, but they make a fun juicy soap opera. Big picture here McG is finished finished and finished. Cliff will get elected. And Shawn the nice enough guy if he wants to get elected in any election needs to make himself and his policies well know. Nobody knows this guy and if and when we do, he will fall and rise on that. Not going to happen in this election.

As far as Liz I am very impressed she had the guts to expose McG for who McG really is behind the scenes. Hell I have been kicked off both the Brambleton Blog and Broadlands blog for saying it the way it is and the whimps over there just could not handle it. And I am proud of getting kicked off πŸ˜‰

I have my Texas austin houston and dallas blogs these days where people are allowed to say what they want and perhaps that is why the Texas economy is the best in the country right now. πŸ™‚ I have loved my time here and have a ton of friends here and always will.

Barbara I believe you know this as I do it was not the amount of housing built here that is killing Loudoun. It is a whole combination of things and one it is the transportation system and that is not caused by the developers that was caused by Loudouns leaders not making it happen. Developers don’t lay out the county transportation overall needs our leaders do. And if our leaders a zillion years ago would of correctly planned for transportation Loudoun could of built as many homes as it could and would of got the economic development in the commercial base. Nope that did not happen. So now it is always the evil builders and developers.

And Barbara you have alluded to this and correct me if I am wrong. Look at the people in the puds and developer planned and built and people came flocking to them for the better life. Fine, great, then they start bitching and moaning the good life is not what exactly they thought it would be. Long commutes over crowded schools well whose fault is that the developers did not have control over the roads and schools outside the puds. the politicians do. I put the blame on the people that move and keep moving here and the politicians not the developers. the developers have and had no control and still don’t they do what they do best build beautiful developments that people want to live in. hmmmmm and many of the dumb asses in politics and and planning did not listen to the developers on how to plan the exterior roads to connect their developments. Developers have world class planners and the government does not. period. Politicians and government always complain they need more money. BS throwing money around does not solve problems. I can go on and on but I am way off topic and I can hear Dalyn all the way from AOL “”just shut up Lee””” I love that girl ha ha ha ha πŸ™‚ I have taken Dalyn on a journey beyond belief and a new and the best chapter is going to start very soon. ha ha ha πŸ™‚

  • It is unbelievable that neither of the newspapers are reporting on McG’s behavior. Pretty useless.

  • New Voice says:

It’s hard not to feel bad for Andrea at all this coming out in this way. If the newspapers decide to follow up on this story, it will be devastating to Andrea because there are people who know a lot more than what has been said here – they won’t post on blogs but will answer questions honestly if asked directly. And having been around the county government building in Leesburg, I can tell you it’s not just her former aides with stories to tell. It’s correct to wish her defeat in November, but I hope for her sake this won’t devolve into personal destruction which could lead to her losing her better paying job as well as the elected office.

  • Leej says:

New Voice McG has nobody to blame but her self. And if all this is true what about the people she has harmed. When you are elected to office whether people like it or not their is a higher road to follow. Like I say to my Kids anything you say do these days can back to haunt you big time especially in the social media. An further it appears this is not just one aide it is many. And if the moving thing is correct god knows what is she has done with the tax payers money. And it appears she also has used her BOS job to launch private careers. Many a politician and many careers has been brought down by the social media and McG should of known this better then anybody have worked for AOL. We all make mistakes and we should be given more chances. But if this is all true she is beyond belief.

OK I will throw this in here.

I have thought long and hard about the two Rail Stations in loudoun. And I was big time for them at one time. But in this economy the money should go to the many not built road projects in Lououn. These stations are not needed at this point for the cost. So I say “””””money for the road projects for the many and no money for the rail which is for the few”””””” Rail is not needed at this time in Loudoun. Buses to the herndon station will be just fine.

  • Patriot says:

RWN, have you asked Shawn Williams about the voice mails yet? Sorry about the previous misspelling.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

new voice, I wouldn’t worry about her day job.

As I said, the pool seems to be limited, and over the years she has been advanced from the “Campaign to Save Courtland Woods” through Wellstone training to the Campaign for Loudoun’s Future to Supervisor and so on.

I believe the formula is the same one that took a lovely young developer’s representative all the way through an appointment in the Wilder administration to the Journey Through Hallowed ground.

But Ms. McG is no Cate Magennis Wyatt.

The Peter Principle is already on display with her, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a safe haven in the industry for her.

It may just no longer come with “Honorable” in front of her name, a vote on the lives of others, and expenses.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

And she isn’t the only one from that crowd that abuses staff–I can recall one young planner who, in the nicest and most discreet professional manner possible asked if she could refer all future inquiries from one particular citizen activist to me or the Chair of the Commission, and only heard later about the abuse that prompted the request.

That person briefly served in an appointed position, and I gather didn’t change their ways much when they were getting paid.

Apparently some people are so sure of the rightness of their mission that it’s okay to abuse the drones on the path to utopia.

  • Leej says:

Most once out of office especially on the local level can’t get the time of day from people from just about anyone like business leaders etc. that would call the office holder back in a second. Once the office holders power is gone they drift into never never land. Did Snow or Lori staying. Nope the saw the writing on he wall and time to move on. They know their power is gone. And McG without being in office knows nobody is going to give her the time a day. And add what Liz started about McG is finished finished and finished without the power of her office. And as some say McG or her aides if she has any left anymore are not defending. Total silence on McG’s part

  • Elder Berry says:

Barbara Munsey it is surprising that you are taking part in this rather sexist round of discussion about McGimsey, Liz let herself get catty and that is too bad but regarding McGimsey it is one thing to disagree with her policies or her votes but the claims made here are mostly personal and unsubtantiated or could be made about many other officeholders. With all the serious problems facing the county, her relationship with her employees is not what should determine her reelection. Don’t think anyone ever cared if Dick Cheney was a pussycat to his assistants. Do think that his party lost the White House because their policies were discredited. Voters have to determine if McGimsey will take the county in the right direction or not, not whether she deserves the Miss Personality award. Leej thank goodness this is not Texas. Virginia outranks Texas on education and lots of other measures and we beat Texas again in climate for business.

  • Loudoun Insider says:

EB, I agree with you on a lot, but give me a break, this is not sexist. She is by far the most unprepared supervisor up on that dais any day of the week. And the treatment of the aides goes way beyond the normal being upset on ocassion. I know she is a pusher of your issues, but most folks on that side of the aisle know that she is unfit for public office. Selecting her as the primary spokesperson has set back those issues years in Loudoun County. it was a collosal mistake, and one that the power brokers were warned about. Oh well. Get ready for four years of pro-residential growth policies.

  • Leej says:

Actually Elder the reports are very misleading one the population and diversity in Texas is much larger. Second Virginia’s business in a large part is dependent on Federal Tax Dollars. Take out business that are dependent on federal tax dollars and Texas is way ahead. A business dependent on tax dollars does not help the national economy. And the amount of kids going to collage and graduating in Texas is far greater if you take out percentages. Reports and studies can be skewed in a million different ways. Don’t get me wrong I like Virginia and especially my friends here πŸ™‚

  • Leej says:

Sorry for the double above and I know double of me will some people insane. To many one of me is too many. πŸ˜‰

OK LI with economic growth comes more people which means more homes and of course more kids. Can’t have it both ways. I will say one thing about data centers they bring in good tax money with few employees, just wish they were hidden. and my new saying will help Loudoun in the immediate future then any rail right now in Loudoun.

“””””money for Loudoun roads for the many before rail for the few. Get the road system fixed with the rail money and then build the rail. Roads will do far more then rail for immediate economic development.

  • Barbara Munsey says:

elderberry, I would hardly call what Liz did catty: she focused on unnaceptable behavior in a professional/public official.

    Being unprepared is unacceptable.

Being unprepared and wasting time on the dais whining about it is unacceptable.

Whining about being unprepared and using that excuse to NOT CAST VOTES is completely unacceptable: she is paid with our tax dollars to cast votes, whether we agree with how she casts them or not.

Whining about being unprepared and BLAMING STAFF is unacceptable, if the content of the whine includes the likes of “why can’t you tell me what page this is on my IPad?” Excuse me, every year her past at AOL gets more inflated, and no matter what she does, we hear about MIT. She recites Green talking points that often have nothing whatsoever to do with the item on the table, and taken all together we have a supposed former senior executive of a tech company who has a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of TECHNOLOGY who wants to save the planet and she can’t participate in “going paperless” by operating her own gadget?

This is not sexist or catty, it is all too unfortunately true.

She had no business being promoted for office in the first place (where is her “internet company”, by the way?), has been a placeholder with a vote, and has no business being reelected.

At least if we’re talking about the people’s business in the district created for her, and not the “business” of the lobbies that want their cutout in charge of the rail corridor and every unbuilt major project in the county.

If we were talking about her looks, her clothes, her figure, then by all means, meow at it.

    But we aren’t.

    And we’re right.

  • edmundburkenator says:

Elder, you’re the guy that injected sexism into this.

You have a point about policies/results, but if these things about being prepared and able to manage a staff properly are true (which I tend to think are), then one who supports the policies McGimsey says she supports might want a better champion than McGimsey.

  • Leej says:

Elder here is a link read the part where this family is moving to Austin quality of life, cost of living and they are buying a home for half the price with a thousand sq ft more. And since I have designed a ton of homes in Austin their home will be detailed far nicer then their home in Chicago.

My point is Virginia and DC have priced themselves out of the market.

Just because you read Virginia is a good place for business, that does not mean it is a good place to afford. ANd just what new businesses are planning to move here ????????

  • Dulles District says:

Andrea McGimsey is walking door to door to find out if your family will be voting for her. She came to our door and asked for our vote. Before I gave her an answer, I asked her why her record shows that she voted/supported efforts that either increased or proposed to increase taxes and why does she still plan to continue down this road knowing full well that the economy is declining and that increasing taxes will not help Loudoun County citizens, but rather the BOS’ budget. She started to justify the increases in taxes. I interrupted her and said I do not want to know why you did it, I want to know if you will stop it. She had no answer. I can tell you right now I am definitely not voting for her. The spending by BOS has to stop!
